Start with a stay you will enjoy whatever the weather

A winter break at Rice Lake, Ontario, works best when the cottage itself is part of the trip. Plan a meal together, choose an outing and leave enough time to enjoy being away. Snow is a possibility, rather than a promise, and a good indoor plan means the trip does not depend on it.

Rice Lake Wellness Villa in Bewdley has two living rooms, a full kitchen and a games room with pool, foosball, darts and table tennis. Bring the ingredients for your first dinner so the evening can begin without another drive.

A simple three-night winter plan

On arrival day, settle into your rooms, cook an easy dinner and choose a game or a film. Use your first full day for one outing, with time to get back before the group is tired. Keep the second full day flexible: a suitable trail if conditions allow, or a full day at the villa if they do not.

An indoor afternoon at the Canadian Canoe Museum

For a day in Peterborough, consider the Canadian Canoe Museum at 2077 Ashburnham Drive. Its exhibition hall offers an indoor outing centred on canoes, kayaks and the stories connected with them. Check the museum’s visitor page for admission, current hours and accessibility details before travelling.

Agree on the visit with your group and check whether advance arrangements are needed for a larger party. Choose the museum for its indoor exhibitions in winter; outdoor paddling experiences are a separate, seasonal option and should not be assumed to be operating.

Port Hope: shops, lunch and a show when dates align

Port Hope offers another way to spend part of the day away from the cottage. Plan a café or lunch stop, browse the shops that are open and look at the Capitol Theatre programme for a film or performance that suits your dates.

Check opening hours and ticket availability directly before building your day around a venue. A show is an option when the schedule fits, not a daily fixture. For Christmas or New Year, confirm holiday hours rather than relying on the usual weekly timetable.

Snowshoeing when conditions suit your group

Northumberland County identifies the Woodland Trails and Oak Ridges Trail as snowshoeing options. Choose a route for the least experienced person in your group, check current access and conditions, and bring suitable equipment. An outdoor plan can be as short as the group needs.

Take care to choose the correct trail network: Beagle Club Trails west of Beagle Club Road are reserved for cross-country skiing from December 1 to March 31. Use the county’s current trail guidance and maps rather than assuming every forest route permits winter walking or snowshoeing.

Keep an evening at the villa

Let dinner and the games room do the work one evening. Share the cooking, arrange a pool or foosball game and leave a living room available for anyone who would rather read or talk. If your group includes children, agree on supervision and bedtime routines before arrival.

The outdoor hot tub and barrel sauna can also be part of your stay. Confirm their current availability, read the host’s instructions and bring suitable clothing and footwear for moving outside. The villa’s lake views do not mean it sits directly on the shoreline; its deeded access is a short walk away and is not confirmation of safe winter ice or lake activities.

Before booking Christmas, New Year or a midweek break

Look through the sleeping plan together: the capacity of 14 includes ten guests in bedrooms and four on two queen sofa beds in shared living areas. Agree on those spaces before booking, and compare the full Airbnb quote using your actual dates and guest count.

Review the minimum stay, cancellation terms and current house rules. This is a quiet getaway: parties, events and pets are not permitted, and quiet hours are 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Festive decorations and snow are not promised. Check road conditions close to departure and allow time for winter travel.
